The French department is committed to teaching students the grammar, language and culture of France. Students who sign up for French can expect to participate in more than just studying out of books! Classes spend time in the language lab using the Internet and grammar/pronunciation software and interacting with peers.

There are four courses that make up the French department at Althoff Catholic:

French 1: Students are taught the basics of the French language. They are introduced to the three of the nine tenses, present, past, and command. They are also introduced to simple phrases such as 'How are you?' and "My name is..." Vocabulary quizzes are given weekly to help students learn objects and actions in French.

French 2: Students are now introduced to the other 6 of the nine tenses. Conjugating and translation is key at this level. This level of French is often considered the most difficult. Vocabulary quizzes are also essential and are given weekly.

French 3: This is often considered the 'downhill' level of grammar. In your third year homework is rare and all class directions are given in French. The year is spent refreshing French 1 & 2 grammar, and easing your way into your fourth year of conversation. Most work is done in class and in the language lab. Translations are often given to keep students 'fresh' on French culture.

French 4: Conversation is the main objective on this level. Tests are given verbally and virtually no English is permitted. As in previous years, students also spend time in the language lab.
